English III Writing

This is the website for my course English III Writing, which is being taught on Wednesdays (2 classes: at 10:30 am and 14:45 pm).

We will use the Academic Writing video series available on Open Courseware. The link is here.

 

Week 15 (1 February): Submission of final term paper; two end of term quizzes.

Week 14 (25 January): Complete textbook (and checking answers)

 

Week 13 (18 January):

Return essay drafts; Checking Units 16 and 17; We will check the Academic Writing Video 4 materials. Make sure you do them for homework.

14:45 Class: I will be about 30 minutes late for class. Please arrive on time as usual but work quietly on your own on Unit 18 (and 19 if you have time). After I arrive we will immediately start checking the academic writing exercises. 

 

Week 12 (11 January):

Submit a complete draft of your paper; Quiz on Units 11-15; Checking Unit 14 & 15; Start Unit 16.

Homework: Complete to the end of Unit 17. Academic Writing Video 4 Materials

 

Week 11 (21 December):

Class cancelled because of illness. Here are the materials for Week 11 and homework to do over the New Year holiday.

1) After watching video 4 from the series Academic Writing, do the materials in the pdf file at the bottom of this webpage (Academic Writing Video 4 Exercise). Print out the pdf, complete the exercises, and bring them to the first class in the new year.

2) Complete the course textbook Write Better With Patterns up to the end of Unit 15.

3) Continue working on your research papers. You will submit a complete draft of your paper on 11 January.

4) Revise Units 11-15. There is a quiz on these units on 11 January.

 

Week 10 (14 December):

Discussion of paper drafts; Check Unit 12; Do Unit 13. Continue with Unit 14 in class and for homework.

Homework: Watch Academic Writing Video 4; Unit 14

 

Week  9 (7 December):

Quiz about Units 6-10. Submit draft 1 of your essay. Start Unit 11.

Important: No excuses are accepted for late submission of the first draft. If you are absent from class, send it by email. The draft is assessed and all late submissions will lose points.

 

Week 8 (30 November):

Exercises about footnoting and the bibliography based on video 3. How to use these techniques in your essays. Check the answers to units 8 & 9. Start work on Unit 10.

Homework: 1) Finish Unit 10; 2) Revise: there is a quiz next week; 3) Write draft 1 of your essay for submission on 7 December.

 

23 November: National Holiday

16 November: No class

 

Week 7 (9 November):

Individual discussion time regarding your essay plans. Please continue work on your essays and/or Unit 9 of WBWP. 

Homework: Watch Academic Writing Video 3, complete up to the end of Unit 9 of WBWP, continue working on your research projects.

 

Week 6 (2 November):

Check Units 6 and 7. Using the structure and formatting advice in Academic Writing video 2 (sample essay), start planning the structure of your essay using the template below. At the end of the class, do peer review of the structure.

Homework: Unit 8, Complete your essay structure and bring it to class next time.

 

Week 5 (26 October):

In class: We have quiz 1 at the beginning of the class. Then check the homework (WBWP Unit 5) and continue with Unit 6 while Philip is check everyone's research plans.

Homework: WBWP Unit 7 and watch Academic Writing video 2.

 

Week 4 (19 October):

In class: Collect and discuss research project outlines; Check the homework WBWP Unit 3 and continue with Units 4 and 5. Next week (26 October) is the first quiz on the materials in the course text.

Homework: Finish WBWP up to the end of Unit 5.

 

Week 3 (12 October):

In class: Check the homework (WBWP Unit 2); Academic Writing Video 1: Comprehension Questions (not assessed); Do WBWP Unit 3; Start thinking about research projects.

Homework: Write the proposal for your research project. Use the form at the bottom of this page (print it out, write it and bring it to class in Week 4).

 

Week 2 (5 October):

In class: Refereeing exercise (for the mini-essay titled "Plagiarism"); Write Better With Patterns Unit 1; Start WBWP Unit 2

Homework: Finish WBWP Unit 2; Watch video 1 of Academic Writing.
