War and Memory in Hokkaido

I am working on a research project called ‘War and Memory in Hokkaido’. In its initial stages the project was funded by a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education (2006-9). The aim is to examine how regional history affects views of World War II history among people in Hokkaido.

Papers from the early stages of the project are as follows.

Conference presentation: ‘War and Memory in Hokkaido’ (Conference of the British Association for Japanese Studies, Norwich, March 2007).

Published paper: ‘Family, Friends and Furusato: "Home" in the Formation of Japanese War Memories’.

Conference proceedings paper: ‘Memories of War Devastation’ (Conference of the International Oral History Association, Guadalajara, September 2008)

Published paper: 'Vietnam and Iraq in Japan: Japanese and American Grassroots Peace Activism'.

Published paper: ‘The Hokkaido Summit as a Springboard for Grassroots Initiatives: The “Peace, Reconciliation and Civil Society” Symposium’ (as second author, with Lukasz Zablonski).

Symposium invited lecture: ‘World War II in Japan's Regions: Memories, Monuments and Media in Hokkaido’, Proceedings of the International Symposium ‘War Memories, Monuments and Media’ (6 February 2009, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines).

Eventually I plan to publish a book on this topic and this page will become an online resource similar to the online appendix for Japan's Contested War Memories.
