Japan's Contested War Memories: online appendix

This online appendix accompanies my book Japan's Contested War Memories: the "memory rifts" in Japanese historical consciousness of World War II (Routledge, 2007). It provides supplementary resources and evidence for the arguments I make in the book.

On this website, as well as in the book, I am not making a case for what Japanese people should say about World War II or what the Japanese government should do to address war responsibility issues. I am an academic, not an activist. I simply argue that a broad spectrum of opinion exists in Japan and that war memories remain highly contested. These pages are intended to illustrate that diversity in opinion and give a flavour of war discourses in Japan in various branches of the media.

Consequently, I have not only provided links to sites presenting views I agree with. A link from my website is not an endorsement of the contents of other people's pages. The primary qualification of the sites accessible from here is that they are sites of individuals or organizations who are important and recognized participants in public war discourses in Japan. The webpages or blogs of private individuals of whom I know nothing have not been included.

The online appendix contains a link to every online resource referred to in the book. However, some sites inevitably move, get updated or disappear completely. Where possible, I have provided links to the English pages, but the simple reality is that the vast majority of materials are only available in Japanese.

The online appendix is organized using the same structure as the book chapters. Access the chapter/topic area from the options below by clicking on the chapter number.

There were also a few small errors/typos in the hardback edition. These have been corrected in the paperback. Please consult the erratum file (left). I apologize for these errors. There are also a number of reviews in the press and academic journals. Please see the reviews page.
