Synopsis

The chapter traces the development of Japanese war memories over the 'long postwar', 1945-2005. Four distinct phases are identified: occupation (to 1952), Cold War conservatism and Japan's return to the international community (to 1972), growing acknowledgement of an aggressive war (to 1993), and Japan's contested war memories in the Heisei Era (since 1993).
