Synopsis

Ideology is central to understanding the 'selective historical gaze': what historical events are given particular meaning by which people and for what purpose. This chapter looks at the historical focus and methodological approaches of historians from across the ideological spectrum. It also discusses history education in relation to both government-approved textbooks and other educational materials (such as educational manga) aimed at children.
