Synopsis

Japanese war memories, I conclude, do not contitute a unique case study but fit an identifiable pattern of contested war memories which emerges in countries that have aggressed against others but endured defeat (or lack of a clear victory) and widespread suffering as a result. The book closes with the lessons of the Japanese experience and some thoughts on the future course of Japanese memories.
