English Teaching
At Hokkaido University my main teaching duties are English classes for undergraduates. I was honoured to receive a 2009 Hokkaido University Commendation for Excellent Teaching based on the results of student evaluations.
From 2007-2009 I was on the online English team in charge of materials production. These materials are gradually being released on Hokkaido University Open Courseware (OCW).
Research Area Teaching
I also teach on my research interests. The course ‘War History and Memory in Japan’ is part of HUSTEP (Hokkaido University Short Term Exchange Program) for international exchange students, and my postgraduate courses in the Graduate School of Education are ‘History Education and Historical Consciousness’ and ‘Education in Britain’. At Hokusei Gakuen University I teach a course on ‘Modern Japanese History’.
In the Graduate School of Education I supervise postgraduate research on topics relating to Japanese history and society. Here is a list of my current or past thesis supervisions.
2010 - present (MA Thesis): Representations of China in the Japanese Media
2009 - present (PhD Thesis): International Students in Japan
2009 - present (MA Thesis): War memories in Hokkaido and Okinawa
2008 - present (PhD Thesis): Historical Reconciliation and Civil Society in Japan.
2007-9 (MA Thesis): International Education and Volunteer Work in Japanese High Schools.
