Welcome to Philip Seaton’s Homepage

Welcome! My name is Philip Seaton. Originally from London, I am an Associate Professor in the Research Faculty of Media and Communication, Hokkaido University, Japan.

This site’s main aim is to introduce my academic research on war memories in Japan and local history/society in Hokkaido. In addition to an up-to-date list of all my publications and research activities it includes links to many online resources (particularly those relating to my book Japan’s Contested War Memories, and my current research project “War and Memory in Hokkaido”).

There are teaching materials for my students at Hokkaido University and Hokusei Gakuen University.

The site features other interests and hobbies, too, particularly photography and music (composition).

I hope you enjoy browsing this site. I welcome contact (click here) from colleagues and inquiries from prospective students who are considering studying at Hokkaido University (but please check here first for FAQs).

My Father’s Dying Wish (my translation of Kurahashi Ayako’s moving autobiography about her father’s request for an apology to the people of China to be put on his gravestone), was published at the end of November 2009. Click here for details.Translation.html
