1) Daiwa Japan Forum Prize 2006: Awarded to "the best article by a young scholar in volume 17" of the journal of the British Association for Japanese Studies. This resulted in a lecture tour to the UK in November 2006.
1) 'War and Memory in Hokkaido': a three-year research grant (2006-2009) from the Japanese Ministry of Education.
Since March 2008 I have had a monthly column in the Hokkaido Shinbun newspaper (called Gyoganzu, "Fish-eye view"). The following projects are "in progress" but not yet "forthcoming": 1) A paper about the rise and decline of the coal industry in Yubari (to be presented at a symposium on Japan's Shrinking Regions, Sheffield University in July 2008). 2) An article co-authored with Greg Hadley on the use of oral history in research about Japanese war history. Work on my War and Memory in Hokkaido project is also on-going. |
